The band had already released six albums and conquered the globe when they came to Mountain Studios in July 1978 for the first time to begin recording their seventh album Jazz. The band quickly discovered that Montreux offered respite from the glare of media attention, allowing them to write and record in relative peace.
When the members of the band returned to Montreux in 1979 to do post-production on their live album Live Killers, they decided to purchase the studio.
Queen's purchase of the studios cemented a relationship between the band and Montreux that was to last until the present day.
Queen recorded a total of seven albums at Mountain Studios, including their final album Made In Heaven - an album that Freddie Mercury never heard in it's finished state.
On 4th December 1971, a fire tour through the Montreux Casino during a concert by Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
The Fire, started by a fan with a flare gun, was immortalised by Deep Purple in their track, 'Smoke On The Water', written and recorded here in Montreux. When the new Montreux Casino opened five years later it contained the state-of-the-art recording studio, Mountains Studios, designed and built by the legendary American studio designer Tom Hidley. Mountain Studios quickly became the recording destination of choice for some of the biggest names in music: AC/DC, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Chris Rea, The Rolling Stones, Yes, Rick Wakeman, Led Zepplin, Bryan Ferry, Stan Getz and Nina Simone, not to mention the music produced during the Montreux Jazz Festival and the 'Rose d'Or de Montreux' television festival. Queen owned the studios between 1979 and 1993. In 2002, the facility re-located to Attalens, near Chatel St Denis.
